On this album she's accompanied by another lady from Detroit, pianist and vibraphon player Terry Pollard. Her remarkable talent for timing, and ability to construct melodic, guitar-like lines, established Dorothy Ashby as one of nowadays' most accomplished modern jazz harpists. This is heritage music for modern-day citizens of the world.ĪSHBY, DOROTHY - SOFT WINDS: THE SWINGING HARP OF DOROTHY ASHB Her rigorous classical training has informed an interconnected vision of Cuban music, in which inspiration comes from the Caribbean island's different rhythms and styles - from Guantánamo's fast-paced changüí, to ubiquitous guaguancó and '70s-style ballada. This super funky album was originally released in 1982 on Nigeria's Supreme Stars International label, and now it's back on wax.ĭaymé Arocena's second long player, rooted in Cuba's classic rhythms, encompasses the rich, diverse musical make-up of her home whilst looking outward to the world she has traveled. However, listening to this record it's pretty clear that playing bass is where Robo's heart really was. And on his own 'Sexy Thing' he even played the cowbell. This is a merely footnote in her history, it is in fact a fine piece of exotica, a killer LP of pop calypso that should appeal not only to fans of her writing, and lovers of '50s kitsch exotica, but calypso fans in general.ĪRIGO, ROBO -& HIS KONASTONE MAJESTY- SEXY THINGĪs a founding member of Pogo Ltd, Robo Arigo played bass, guitar and organ on both of that band's albums. Baleka (Siwo Edit) (07:50)Īt age 28, prior to her fame as a poet and author, Maya Angelou was performing modern dance and singing calypso tunes in San Francisco nightclubs. Baleka (The Comet Is Coming Remix) (05:53) SIDE 2: 1. And now get your ass over to that dancefloor! SIDE 1: 1. This minimal and powerful mix of African rhythms with new wave vocals, and an irresistible mbira gimmick won't stay unnoticed this time around. This 12-inch contains not only the original recording of 'Baleka', but also two new versions courtesey of London's The Comet Is Coming and Blackjoy (Siwo) from Paris. During its active days Zimba released only one song, 'Baleka', which stayed under the radar back in 1983. With his partner Marga he started the band Zimba, which enjoyed a 10-year career of playing clubs around the country. In the mid-'70s, musician and songwriter Phil Arosa fled the apartheid of Southern Rhodesia (now Zimbabwe) to settle in the Netherlands and pursue his musical career under more mundane skies. Is he an escaped musician from one of the first Cambodian rock bands of the 1960s? A surviving producer from the 1980s Paris? Or a composer in transit in one of the many places of the Laotian diaspora? Sothy eludes any researches and disappears behind his numerous homonyms. And then who's Sothy? Along with the unverifiable identity of the seemingly Laotian singers, skepticism gains ground concerning the man behind the pseudonym. 'Chansons Laotiennes' still remains hard to classify. Everything comes with a reason: the record was edited in 1981 under the title Sothy Productions yet produced in France by the Parisian label Oxygène (famously known for its unforgettable first French punk compilation '125 grammes de 33 1/3 tours'). This 12" includes the original remaster and edited versions by Parisian producer Shelter. Rare cosmic Lao synth pop recorded in Paris 1980.
